Book 5: Another Way
Episode 8
© by William Arthur HolmesPatting Dobie’s shoulder, Audrey said, “Let me out. I need to pee.”
Once Audrey was out of earshot, he said to Kaylie, “Whatever happened to ‘powder my nose?’”
She smiled, knowing she’d been right. He did need her to rescue him.
Blount came around the corner from behind Audrey just as she headed for the restroom. He was pleased with his own good timing. Watching a woman in tight pants walk away was one of his favorite things. Of course, this time of year he could be found by the hotel pool, drooling over the bikini-clad women.
Dobie was climbing out of the booth when a large, bearded man – obviously drunk – staggered into the diner. He barely fit through the front door but didn’t look like the same man out in the rain earlier. For one, there was no hat or trench coat.
“Honey, I’m home!” the man said loudly to the room. To Kaylie directly, he snapped, “Get in the car! Let’s go!”
Blount giggled. He knew this man well. Often wished he could trade places with him. Just one night with Kaylie, and Blount could die a happy man.
“No, JD,” Kaylie spoke as if to a misbehaving child. “You’re drunk. Dobie here is giving me a ride.”
Dobie gave a little wave, cleared his throat, and said, “Yep, she’s coming with me. Like she said, you’re drunk. Maybe I should give you both a ride?”
Kaylie stopped smiling.
“You don’t want to violate your parole,” Dobie continued, “with another DUI, do you?”
“Naw, man... wait, how’d you know I was out on parole?”
“Wild guess.”
“Nobody’s that good a guesser!”
“I am,” said Dobie. “Always have been.”
“And what’d she say your name was? Dopey?”
Blount and Audrey both laughed.
