“It’s just a flesh wound,” Watson shook his head, grimacing.

Dobie smiled at his tough guy act but said nothing.

County sheriffs arrived after it was all over and Dobie had put Kaylie into Sabina’s passenger seat. Now behind the wheel, he started the car and scoffed at the three patrol cars speeding down Blount’s driveway. Full sirens and lights. Flinging gravel and dust the whole way.

He would not have expected so many deputies to be available in such a low-population area. Must be a slow day. The deputies ordered Dobie out of the car, with the engine off.

Dobie turned off the car but remained sitting next to Kaylie. “You can interrogate us all you want,” he said, “while we sit in the car. Or, not at all.” After what they had been through, he was feeling like a bad ass.

Dobie and Kaylie — a.k.a. Bonnie and Clyde, Dobie snorted — each had a deputy at their window asking questions and taking notes. They parked one car to block Sabina in. He and Kaylie weren’t going anywhere until the cops were finished with them.

Watson was pulled aside and interviewed separately. He was having a hard time convincing them that he was the good guy — hero, even — in all of this. “The bad guy is dead on the floor of the barn!”
