In the hospital waiting room outside the emergency room, Dobie et al. learned from an on-scene EMT still hanging around — staying close to Glynnis — that the explosion had killed the driver of that car and the tower controller. The latter’s last act in life was to help them land safely.
The pilot had been checked out and cleared to leave when Shane stopped him and asked, “So, we were supposed to be taxiing into that hangar, but the car beat us to it?”
The pilot nodded impatiently, putting on his jacket, which still smelled of jet fuel.
“And as soon as the car entered the hangar,” Shane continued, “the whole thing blew up?”
The pilot nodded again, looked at his watch, and said, “Look, I gotta go.”
“Sounds like we were meant to be the first ones into that hangar...” Shane began.
“...and be the ones who blew up,” Dobie finished for him.
