Book 4: Lottery President
Episode 2
© by William Arthur HolmesThe Ticket
Three lottery officials — two women and one man — sat at the far end of a conference table inside. Dobie took the only available chair, across the table from them, near the door.
When they asked him to give his ticket to the security guard, he hesitated. What’s to stop this guy from taking my winning ticket and running?
Dobie reluctantly relinquished the ticket to the guard. The man smiled mischievously and made a feint toward the door. Dobie turned in his chair and almost said something, but the man turned back and laughed uproariously as he walked the ticket over to the younger woman official at the end of the table.
Hilarious, dude.
The woman smiled, shook her head at the guard, and accepted the ticket. The male lottery official took and ran the ticket under a hand scanner. When the light turned green and sounded the appropriate ding, he and the younger woman took turns scrutinizing it under magnifying glasses.
